Vacuum bags are the most space-efficient way to keep opened filament dry — but “vacuum bag” covers several designs that behave very differently on a shelf. The valve style decides how reliably the seal holds and how easy re-vacuuming is. The bag shape decides how your collection stacks, hangs, and stays identifiable. How filament vacuum bags actually work
A filament vacuum bag is not a kitchen sous-vide bag. It combines three parts: a zipper seal you close by hand (usually with a slider clip to press it shut), a one-way valve that lets a pump pull air out but not back in, and a multi-layer film thick enough to survive spool edges. Add a desiccant pack inside and you get a sealed micro-environment where the small amount of remaining air is quickly stripped of its moisture.
Two things follow from this design. First, the valve is the most stressed component — it is the only engineered opening in the bag, and every failure story starts there or at the zipper. The valve decision: no-cap vs. with-cap
Both designs use a one-way valve. The difference is what protects that valve afterward.
A no-cap valve is self-sealing: an internal membrane closes when the pump detaches. Nothing to screw on, nothing to lose. Re-vacuuming takes seconds — press the pump on the valve and pull.
A with-cap valve adds a screw-on or press-on cap over the same membrane. The cap is a second physical barrier: if the membrane ever seats imperfectly (a dust particle, a stray filament fragment), the cap still blocks airflow.

The size decision
Most bags are sized for the standard spool family: 250 g, 500 g, and 1 kg spools all fit a 13 × 15 in (33 × 38 cm) bag. The common mistakes are at the edges: oversized 2–3 kg spools need dedicated large bags, and cardboard-spool refills with loose winding benefit from gentler vacuum pressure — stop pumping once the bag firms up around the spool rather than pulling maximum vacuum. Over-vacuuming is unnecessary: the goal is removing bulk air, not shrink-wrapping the spool. A bag that has formed firmly around the spool has already done its job.

Frequently asked questions
How long does the vacuum hold?
A properly sealed bag with a clean valve holds vacuum for months. If a bag softens earlier, the usual causes are debris in the zipper track, a filament fragment on the valve membrane, or a puncture from a sharp spool edge. Re-clean, re-seal, and re-vacuum takes under a minute.
Are filament vacuum bags reusable?
Yes. Open the zipper carefully (don’t tear it), inspect the film and valve, and reseal. A bag in good condition survives many cycles. Retire a bag when the zipper no longer clicks fully shut or the film shows creased stress lines.
Do I still need desiccant inside a vacuum bag?
Yes. Vacuuming removes most of the air but not all of it, and film transmits tiny amounts of moisture over months. A rechargeable desiccant pack inside each bag absorbs what remains and acts as your early-warning indicator — if it saturates quickly, the seal has a problem.
What if a bag gets punctured?
